Initial meeting (60 minutes): during this time, we discuss your diet, social, and medical history. We discuss your past diet efforts - what worked and what failed. We ask about your favorite and least favorite foods in an attempt to design an enjoyable plan. We do provide some education based on your underlying medical condition and/or goals, plan a menu and set up to 5 measurable and specific goals for you to focus on until you return.

During this session, we aim to set short-term and long-term goals to capitalize on the success of your past efforts and ensure that we have a winning plan for our work together.

First follow-up: at Top Balance Nutrition, we do not recommend "packages" as each person is unique and you need to be learning something during each visit.

The dietitian determines the frequency and duration of the follow-up appointments during your session. Most people prefer to come in every two weeks for 30 - 45 minutes

During that time, we review your progress, questions, and obstacles.

For patients with high cholesterol, we may spend a session on high-fiber meals and snack ideas. For those with hypertension, flavoring food without salt/cutting out sugar or adding more potassium to the meals and snacks. As time goes on, the plans become more individualized potentially adding exercise, sleep and stress management goals to the mix.

Measurements

Caliper Measurements

The first session usually goes by too fast and there is too much to discuss, but as time goes on, we may recommend using calipers to measure your body fat percentage. The scale is only one gauge of success. This number may be especially useful for athletes or those engaging in a regular strength training program.

Indirect Calorimeter/Metabolic Testing

Metabolic Testing

We use MedGem indirect calorimeter device to determine your basal metabolic rate with 97% accuracy to help you better understand the calories your body needs to lose, gain, or maintain weight. This non-invasive, breathing test is best performed first thing in the morning. You need to be fasted and rested for at least 4-6 hours prior.
